Connie became interested in becoming part of a therapy dog team when she was raising puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind and fell in love with spending time with the dogs in public. In 2010 she adopted a career change dog from Guide Dogs for the Blind after the dog she raised became a working Guide. Butch was perfect in every way but could not pass the therapy dog test. Fast forward to 2023. After Connie took her last Guide Dog Puppy in training back to Guide Dogs for the Blind she was ready for a pet dog. She learned of Tia, an English Labrador who was going to be a show dog but did not make it in that arena but had the right temperament to be a therapy dog. She met her in Northern California and fell in love.
Connie and Tia were certified as a therapy dog team in February of 2024. When asked where they like to visit, Connie responded “Tia definitely has her favorite places. She loves children so we go to Walterville Elementary and McCornack Elementary schools weekly and we spend time in the school library and kids come in and read to her. Her favorite is when she can lay on the floor alongside the kids and they can rub her belly and read to her. We also go to the University of Oregon when we are requested. She also has a fondness for the students who are missing their pets from home. One of my favorite experiences was when a young man asked if he could play his violin for her. I love hearing all of their stories about their pets from home. When we take our walks on campus it is really fun when students remember her.
Tia and I also go out to the Eugene Airport where she provides comfort to all of those traveling. It is fun to watch people and hear their stories about their dogs. The TSA agents are always so happy to have her stop by. The newest place we visit is McKenzie Willamette Hospital. She really enjoys going into the rooms and hanging out with the visitors and patients. The staff is always very happy to receive a little furry love.
We really enjoy all the opportunities we have as a team.”
